Is it a buzzword?
Some of you may recall that when I first founded Spot On Digital Marketing the company was named Castillo Media Group.
At the beginning of 2015 I decided to rename the company. I wanted a name that gives a better indication in regards to what we actually do.
It took me weeks and several walks in the local park to come up with a name I was happy with. When I went to my community and asked for feedback on the new name, ”Spot On Digital Marketing”, many people said that no one knows what digital marketing is and, that it is only a buzzword. Nevertheless, I have decided to go with this new name because I believed this buzzword would one day become a mainstream term.
Turns out, I was right.
I have conducted a quick keyword research this morning in order to get an idea of how popular the term is. As you can see from the numbers below, people use digital marketing related searched way more often than they use “Internet marketing” or “Online marketing”, terms.
- Digital marketing – 301,000/month
- Online marketing – 74,000/ month
- Internet marketing – 40,500/ month
Checking with Google Trends confirmed this too. As you can see in the graph below the term Digital Marketing is been up trending for several years now.
Still, whenever I go to a networking event, there are always a few people who ask me “What exactly is Digital Marketing?”
I think we can agree. Digital Marketing is NOT a buzzword.
What is Digital Marketing than?
The definition of marketing as defined by the American marketing association is
Digital marketing refers to marketing activities that use digital technologies. This includes both the Internet as well as mobile devices.
Digital marketing tactics and related activities include:
- Search Engine Optimization
- Social media marketing
- Email marketing
- Marketing automation
- Content marketing
- Affiliate marketing
- Web development
What is also interesting to note is the huge amount of digital marketing tools and solutions that are available out there. And the number grows every day. According to research done by Chiefmartec.com, there were more than 6000 digital marketing tools available to you on April 2018.
It can be really overwhelming.
The key to digital marketing success, in my opinion, is to make a plan that is based on a thorough analysis of your business, your needs and your goals as a company.
